Caterham drivers say luck is needed for team to finish year 10th

Caterham needs luck on its side to reclaim 10th place in the constructors' championship, according to drivers Heikki Kovalainen and Vitaly Petrov

The Caterham-Renault CT01 has generally been the 10th fastest car this season, but Timo Glock's 12th place in the Singapore Grand Prix has given Marussia the advantage in the championship.

Caterham does not have the pace to get involved in the fight in the midfield, so even if it finishes the remaining five races ahead of Marussia, it is relying on others hitting trouble to get the necessary result to move back ahead.

A 12th place will be enough to take the position on countback to number of 13th places.

"Absolutely, that's the frustrating part," Kovalainen told AUTOSPORT when asked about luck being the deciding factor.

"We've had a lot of good races and we've been ahead of them most of the time.

"Even in Singapore, without the safety car, especially the second one, I had the race in the bag and would have finished ahead of Timo.

"There's nothing you can do about it and we have got to try and maximise what we have got."

Team-mate Petrov believes that Singapore was always a potentially decisive race.

But he is still confident that the team has the stronger car and can reverse the bad luck that cost it 10th place.

"It's frustrating because our car is quicker," Petrov told AUTOSPORT.

"Singapore is a difficult track and I was thinking that maybe we could have finished 11th or 12th and then our 10th position would be safe but this is what Marussia did.

Kovalainen is hopeful that a wet race in the run-in to the end of the campaign could give the team a good opportunity to overhaul Marussia.

But he has not ruled out being able to claim a 12th place in dry conditions.

"Rain always helps and a big wet race presents a lot more opportunities for things to go right or go wrong," said Kovalainen.

"But in Suzuka in 2010, I finished 12th in a dry race and last weekend I was up to 11th and a lot of cars were out, so you never know."
