Berger slams chances of test drivers

Former Grand Prix drivers who have given up their race seats in favour of testing roles are unlikely to find their way back onto the Formula 1 grid, according to BMW's motorsport boss Gerhard Berger

According to this week's Motorsport News, AUTOSPORT's sister publication, he says there is no way back for either Williams tester Marc Gene or his McLaren counterpart Alexander Wurz. The fact that Olivier Panis returned to Grand Prix racing with BAR after taking time out to test for McLaren was a one-off, according to the Austrian.

"I don't see either Wurz or Gene getting a place back regularly in F1," he told MN. "There is a reason why you are not in F1 and for both of them I don't see them as regular race drivers. The Panis effect was a one-off as he showed a really special performance in testing. But, with full respect to Marc, who is doing a perfect job for us, I can't see anything exceptional.

"Alex is the same. If McLaren had seen an extra special talent in Alex, they would have given him the drive ahead of Kimi Raikkonen," he added.
