Barcelona, day 1: Trulli on top

The morning fog lifted at the Circuit de Catalunya but Jarno Trulli retained his place at the top of the timesheets, recording a best lap of 1m19.493s on the first day of testing today (Monday). The Italian's best lap came during a frantic final 10 minutes, when all five of the cars present were on track

Trulli, whose Renault ran reliably all day, was a second and a half up on the next quickest driver, Enrique Bernoldi in the Arrows A23. There was no repeat of the frightening rear wing failures that befell team-mate Heinz-Harald Frentzen at the previous test, but the Brazilian did complete the fewest laps of any of the drivers - just 16 - although the team had only planned to run installation checks today.

In contrast, Takuma Sato did almost a complete race distance in the new Jordan, recording a best time of 1m21.595s as he worked on the set-up of the EJ12. German Formula Renault champion Marcel Lasee was in the team's other new car, and the 20-year-old did a good job, ending the day a little over a second behind Sato.

Alex Yoong put some more miles on the Minardi PS02, but the Malaysian driver was well off the pace - his best lap was over six seconds off Trulli's time.

Michael Schumacher continued to work on the new Ferrari F2002 today at Fiorano. The world champion covered 46 laps, setting a best time of 58.669s
