Firman Hopeful of Staying with Jordan

Ralph Firman is hopeful of securing a deal to remain at Jordan next season and a spokesperson on his behalf confirmed that the Briton is in talks to put a financial package together to fund a drive.

Firman endured a disappointing debut season in Formula One this year, scoring only one point for Jordan, but the 28-year-old is attempting to extend his contract for another year. His management team have held talks with team boss Eddie Jordan but now need to secure the funding required to land a seat with the cash-strapped team in 2004.

"Ralph is determined to remain at Jordan next season because, although 2003 was extremely difficult for the team, he is confident that the team can make good progress," a spokesperson said. "Ralph and his management are in regular contact with the team and working hard to assist Jordan find the right backing and support for 2004.

"From his own point of view, coping with one-lap qualifying as an F1-rookie on a dozen circuits on which he had never driven before, meant that he has had a tough learning year and is hoping to put all that to good use on 2004."

Jordan will begin testing preparations for the new season in Spain next month and Firman is waiting to discover whether he will be in the cockpit.

"Ralph is available to the team for the forthcoming test in Jerez, although it is understood that Jordan may try out one or two new drivers which are under consideration for race or test roles next year," the spokesperson added.
