Alonso Makes Dream Come True with Historic Win

Spaniard Fernando Alonso described entering the Formula One record books as the youngest race winner as "fantastic" following his victory in the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday.

Alonso, 22, led from start to finish to score Renault's first victory in 20 years with a dominant performance at the Hungaroring, leaving the talented youngster targeting further success.

"The weekend was fantastic," said Alonso, whose victory at the age of 22 years and 26 days put him ahead of previous youngest winners American Troy Ruttman, who won the 1952 Indianapolis 500, and New Zealander Bruce McLaren, who claimed his first win in the USA in 1959.

"Firstly pole position and now the victory for me is a dream come true. I am 22 years of age and I have my first victory in my pocket so I hope for a long career in Formula One with more victories."

Alonso, who became the eighth different winner this season, admitted being surprised that he was able to win the race with ease as he ended 16.768 seconds ahead of McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen.

"In the first two or three laps I had Mark Webber in the mirror and on the eighth or ninth lap I asked where the others were and they said 15 seconds behind," Alonso said. "I thought 'my gosh I am very fast'. The speed of the car was very important for the result of the race and I pushed quite hard in the early stages and gained a big advantage. I was quite slow after that.

"With a few laps to go I had Jarno (Trulli) and Michael (Schumacher) in front of me and I lapped them. They obviously had more problems than me - I had a perfect car throughout the race and have to thank the team."
