Alonso vows not to change approach

Fernando Alonso has vowed not to change his approach to racing in Formula One following his return to work with the Renault team

The Spaniard endured a controversial 2007 season with McLaren, in the end leading to the double champion parting company with the British team two years before the end his contract.

Alonso, who last year's title by two points, has now returned to Renault, with whom he won his two titles in 2005 and 2006.

But despite his troubles in 2007, the Spaniard has vowed to keep the same approach in order to return to the top with the French squad.

"It will be the same as I have always had," Alonso, testing today at Jerez, said. "At the start of any season, the only thing I want to do is work hard, and to give maximum effort to achieve my potential.

"I know I can do this successfully with ING Renault F1 team, because we have managed it in the past. I want to give everything I can, and I know the team will do everything to win; this is always our approach to the sport."

Alonso said many things have changed at Renault since he was there two years ago, but the two-time champion admits he still has strong memories of his times there.

"The team is completely different to the one I left in 2006," he added. "There have been some big changes, they have improved a lot of things and strengthened many areas, so in one sense it is a new adventure with a new team.

"At the same time, it is impossible to forget the six years I spent as a Renault driver, and my memories of that time are still strong."

Renault struggled for pace in 2007 and the team are pinning their hopes on the new R28 to revive their fortunes this season.

Alonso, however, is not making any predictions yet.

"I have seen some of the data for how we hope the R28 will perform but nothing more at this time.

"When you launch a new car, expectations are always high and you put a lot of hope and a year's work into the car. As always, though, you have to wait for the car to run for the first time."
