Alonso confident despite slow start

Fernando Alonso has played down the significance of his slow time in practice for the United States Grand Prix, saying he was confident of a strong weekend at Indianapolis

Renault driver Alonso, who has yet to reach the finish line in four previous visits to the Brickyard, did not take part in the morning session and produced only the ninth best effort in the afternoon.

The 24-year-old Spaniard has said he expects the US Grand Prix to provide his toughest test of the season, but he sounded confident of a strong race.

"This was a normal Friday for me," said Alonso, winner of the last four races. "The grip levels are quite low at the moment, but that was the only major problem and the balance of the car feels OK.

"Friday is all about understanding the tyre behaviour and what direction you need to go in with set-up, which we have done.

"The circuit grip will improve as we run more, so the track should come to us a little bit, and I am confident for the rest of the weekend."

Teammate Giancarlo Fisichella was also upbeat about his chances after posting the third quickest time of the day. The Italian was the fastest racing driver.

"This was one of the best Friday sessions of the season so far for me," said the Italian. "The R26 felt comfortable to drive straight away, and as we made set-up changes it got better and better.

"The balance is quite good, and we know we are moving in the right direction. We have understood how the tyres are working as well, so it all looks encouraging for tomorrow."
