Monza Test: Day One

Rubens Barrichello took up Ferrari team-mate Michael Schumacher's mantle in his absence by topping the times after the first day's testing at Monza. The order on the Monza time sheets took on a very familiar look with a McLaren close behind Barrichello driven by test driver Olivier Panis

Rain in the morning delayed running but a drying track in the afternoon allowed all the teams present to set times. All the teams were working on lower downforce set ups in preparation for the Canadian GP.

Jenson Button boosted his confidence by outpacing Williams test driver Junqueira, the man he beat to the Williams drive in February.

Less fortunate were Jaguar's test driver Luciano Burti who suffered a blown engine and Prost's Nick Heidfeld whose carbon fibre monocoque cracked as he went down the pit straight.

McLaren's Mika Hakkinen was due to test today but did not appear. He is expected tomorrow. Testing continues tomorrow until the end of the week.
