Police set up Silverstone exclusion zone
Police have set up an exclusion zone stretching for up to eight miles around Silverstone on Saturday turning away thousands of spectators who have defied a circuit order to stay away today.
Organisers had warned that all public car parks would be closed and anyone turning up in a car would be turned away. Despite that instruction thousands were converging on the circuit early on Saturday morning and police stationed on road blocks on major roads near Brackley and Towcester and on many country lanes were turning cars back one by one.
Many more die-hard fans are walking miles from local villages in order to see qualifying. Coaches are the only vehicles being allowed into the circuit.
Thousands of fans had been expected but not as many as the 60,000 that pack the summer for its usual mid-summer slot. Organisers had issued the stay-away order so that they can work on car parks for Sunday's race, which is expected to be attended by a sell-out 135,000 spectators and guests.
