Weekend review and results round-up
Fernando Alonso is now championship leader Mark Webber's biggest rival for the Formula 1 title after the Ferrari driver pulled off an unlikely victory over Sebastian Vettel's faster Red Bull in a thrilling Singapore Grand Prix
Webber kept himself in front in the standings with third, just ahead of Jenson Button, but Lewis Hamilton's hopes were dented when he had to retire with a damaged car for the second race in a row, this time after contact with Webber.
How many races the five drivers have left to settle their contest remains unclear, with Bernie Ecclestone admitting this weekend that the Korean Grand Prix was at risk of being cancelled. A few days earlier, Ecclestone had also unsettled the drivers by floating his idea of a medals system again - a suggestion that did not go down well.
The other big news of the Singapore weekend came from Lotus, which has secured the historic Team Lotus title for 2011, but tension with Group Lotus and its own motorsport ambitions seems to be brewing.
Away from F1, the Dover NASCAR weekend was dominated by acrimony and accusation flying between the Richard Childress and Joe Gibbs teams, while Jimmie Johnson rose above it all to deliver a characteristically no-nonsense victory.
Romain Grosjean will lead Auto GP into its Monza finale after a hard-fought win at Spain's new Navarra track, and Juho Hanninen has one hand on the Intercontinental Rally Challenge title thanks to a close second place behind local expert Paolo Andreucci in Sanremo.
British Formula 3 wrapped up at Brands Hatch, where champion Jean-Eric Vergne was out of sorts and left the winning to Oli Webb, Daniel McKenzie and James Calado - the latter's triumph coming in an epic mixed-weather race.
