Coulthard calls on his public

David Coulthard is calling on the British public to get behind his title bid

The Scot wants to receive the same fanatical national support that inspired Nigel Mansell and Damon Hill.

'There is no doubt in my mind that I have what it takes to win,' he said. 'I would call on the British public to get behind me.

'They really can make a difference. Back me and I'll deliver the World Championship.'

With the departure of Hill, the British crowds will be looking for a new hero. Coulthard hopes to divert their attention away from Eddie Irvine and the new Jaguar team.

'I take away nothing from what Eddie did last season, but he knows he was lucky to be in with a chance of the title,' Coulthard continued.

'Damon Hill and Nigel Mansell enjoyed fantastic backing, and they earned it. I have to do the same, and I believe I can.

'With a change of luck I know I can give Britain another shot.'
