Montezemolo: We deserve title

Ferrari chief Luca di Montezemolo says that his team deserved to win this year's Constructors' championship, ahead of main title rivals McLaren.

'I am happy to win the Constructors' Championship,' he said. 'Hakkinen drove a very good race and he deserved the final victory, whilst we deserved the Constructors' title.

The Italian claims its title victory is even sweeter, considering the trouble Ferrari looked to be in earlier in the season - when Michael Schumacher was sidelined with a broken leg, after crashing in the British Grand Prix in July.

'The result means a lot and has come after a difficult year.

'At one point during the season, nobody could have imagined that we would battle for the Drivers' Championship at the last race.

Di Montezemolo also claims that the Italian marque did its best to provide championship contender Irvine with the best support for the championship.

'Irvine had his best season ever with Ferrari, the team gave him everything they could giving him a driver like Salo to support him,' he commented.
