Barc 1: Gene flies for Ferrari
Marc Gene got his Ferrari career off to flying start by going fastest on the first day of winter testing at Barcelona on Tuesday. Mark Webber also made his team debut for Williams, although the Australian only completed four shakedown laps in preparation for tomorrow
"Today was just an installation," said Webber. "I only did one lap at full throttle. So I am afraid I can't tell you much. Tomorrow I start the real serious testing and I really can't wait.
"I was really happy to be back in car but it wasn't a real serious test today. I just wanted to make sure I will not have silly problems with the seating position or the mirror tomorrow."
Gene, who was announced as an official Ferrari test driver on Tuesday, set his best time in the morning session while acclimatising to the standard 2004 Ferrari.
The Spaniard made so much progress however that the team bolted on a 2005 aero-package in the afternoon, whereafter he went much slower.
Jarno Trulli was second quickest for Toyota. The Italian, who switched from Renault to the Japanese manufacturer late in the 2004 season, concentrated mainly on traction control work and a new steering system.
Trulli's new Toyota team-mate Ralf Schumacher was on hand to take part in the debrief and get a feel for his new team before joining in the test tomorrow.
The only other man to complete any running was regular Ferrari tester Luca Badoer, who ran the team's 2005 aero package from the off.
