Dominguez aiming for GP switch
Champ Car World Series race winner Mario Dominguez is seeking a switch to Formula 1, according to reports in the Mexican press. Dominguez, who drives for Herdez Competition in Champ Cars, is reported to have been approached by officials behind the new Midland F1 project to drive for them in 2006
Dominguez, who has two years to run on his contract with Herdez, admitted that he has F1 ambitions at the Champ Car finale in Mexico City last weekend.
"It seems like a very serious project and they're [Midland] going to have a team in 2006, which includes a race in Cancun which is a big plus for me," he said. "I'd like to win a championship here (in ChampCar) but it's always been my dream to drive in Formula 1."
Herdez (which owns a large stake in the Champ Car team managed by former F1 team boss Keith Wiggins) is severely reducing its backing in 2005 and may pull out of the sport altogether. Should that happen, Dominguez could find himself free of his Champ Car obligations.
Wiggins remains confident that the team will continue. "I'd be lying to you if I told you it's cut and dried," he said. "But we're moving forward on the sponsorship side of things. There are two more years remaining on Mario's contract. We'd like to maintain continuity and have Ryan [Hunter-Reay] back, but there are money issues."
