Salo's Toyota best
Mika Salo recovered from missing all of Friday's British Grand Prix practice with a stomach infection to register Toyota's best ever qualifying performance. The Finn will start eighth after setting a time of 1m20.995s, beating the Japanese giant's best previous qualifying effort of tenth
"We had a slow morning with only a few laps done, and the car was not great," he said. "After a difficult start to the weekend, eighth place is more than good. We have a bit of work to do on race set-up because I lost both Friday sessions."
Team-mate Alan McNish, who hit an unfortunate hare during the morning practice session, was disappointed to line up only 15th.
"We still need more traction and I lost quite a lot in the last two corners," he said. "I got held up by Raikkonen on my best run. It's disappointing but it's one of those things."
Chief designer Gustav Brunner paid tribute to the efforts of his drivers. "We are all over the moon," he said, "Mika and Allan did a sterling job."
