Jerez test, day 3: Badoer top, Jacques goes off
Ferrari's Luca Badoer topped the timesheets on the third and final day (Wednesday) of Jerez testing - while British American Racing's Jacques Villeneuve became the second driver to prang a 2001-spec Formula 1 car
The Canadian was behind the wheel of the Honda-powered BAR003 for a second day, but had to cut short his afternoon session when a suspected suspension problem pitched the car off the track and into a barrier. Villeneuve was unhurt in the accident and the team says it is mounting an investigation to find the cause.
Damp conditions in the morning didn't stop Badoer from notching up 102 laps over the course of the day while he ran with development parts on a 2000-spec Ferrari. The Italian's best lap of 1m22.79s was just 0.04s quicker than BAR's Olivier Panis, who continued to test Honda's traction control system in a 2000 car.
"I had a reasonable run today despite the slow start because of the wet track," said the Frenchman. "I continued with the traction control development tests and we have made some good progress. I am happy with the end result."
Kimi Raikkonen took over development duties on Sauber's new C20 from Nick Heidfeld, posting the third best time in the course of 53 laps of running.
