Mercedes F1's Hamilton 'unbeatable on a good day', boss Wolff says

Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff believes Lewis Hamilton is 'unbeatable on a good day', following his run of victories to take the Formula 1 world championship lead

Six wins in seven races - including all four in July - means Hamilton left the German Grand Prix with a 19-point cushion over team-mate Nico Rosberg, turning around what was a 43-point deficit in mid-May.

How Hockenheim summed up Hamilton vs Rosberg

It is a run of form that matches Hamilton's best in F1, when he won six of the final seven grands prix in 2014 to clinch his second world title, and first with Mercedes.

"It's a very good streak - an impressive record," said Wolff.

"It's like Nico at the end of last season and the beginning of this [when Rosberg won seven in a row], and he's recovered all of those points he lost.

"If there is something like momentum, it's for him to keep that momentum, but we've seen that coming in waves from all directions.

"I will be interested to see how it's going to pan out after the summer break."

Hamilton: It doesn't feel like I lead the points yet

Suggested that, based on his current record, Hamilton is only beatable when he strikes problems, Wolff said: "The guy has great talent and speed, and on a good day he's unbeatable.

"But then it's still a mechanical sport, he's human, and you can have bad days and worse days, and this is why he's not winning every single race.

"I really admire the way it's going, the ping pong between these two, and the way they keep coming back."

Rosberg has now won just one of the last eight races since starting the campaign with four-consecutive victories, and finished a troubled home race at Hockenheim in fourth.

Wolff fully expects Rosberg to regroup over the coming weeks and produce a comeback of his own when the season resumes at Spa at the end of August.

"He can recover," said Wolff.

"We saw him start the season extremely well, and at the end of the season in 2015 he was very good.

"There are still nine races to go, with still over 200 points to collect, and anything goes.

"He's mentally very strong, and nothing's done yet. Once he has recovered in the next couple of days I have no doubt he will come back very strong at Spa."
