New faces take centre stage at Barcelona test
With a cold-ridden Ralf Schumacher sent home by Williams and Eddie Irvine stepping down from Jaguar testing duties, day three of Formula 1 testing at Barcelona has become the preserve of the new boys
Jenson Button topped the unofficial morning times with a 1m21.2s lap in his Benetton-Renault, but was run close by the impressive Fernando Alonso.
The Spaniard, who is set to drive for the currently engineless Minardi team in 2001, posted a best lap of 1m21.6s in his Benetton as he continued to notch up the 300 kilometres of test miles needed to apply for a super licence.
After appraising Enrique Bernoldi yesterday (Wednesday), Prost ran Champ Car driver Oriol Servia at the Spanish circuit today. Team leader Jean Alesi set a best morning time of 1m22.8s on a day when F1 returnee Michelin concentrated on endurance testing of its tyres. Cloudier conditions meant track temperatures were slightly reduced from Wednesday.
Jaguar Racing gave German Formula 3 driver Andre Lotterer an outing in its interim-spec R1, concentrating on familiarisation rather than outright lap times.
