Diniz Snr buys stake in Prost Grand Prix

Abilio Diniz is the owner of a large chain of supermarkets in Brazil and has purchased a minority shareholding, believed to be about 30-40 per cent, in the French-based team, which is owned by multiple world champion Alain Prost.

The move is likely to cement a position for Diniz Jnr at Prost next season, although not necessarily as a driver alongside Jean Alesi. Pedro could take a team manager's role within the team, leaving the way clear for Argentinian Gaston Mazzacane to join the driving strength. He would bring substantial financial support from South American cable network PSN, which could replace Prost's Gauloises backing which it lost at the end of the season.

Prost has cancelled its test programme at Jerez next week as it finalises its 2001 plans, which includes Ferrari engines and gearboxes.

"There are a few engines [available] and many things to test," said Prost's Joan Villadelprat. "We have cancelled Jerez to focus on a longer session at Barcelona."
