New chicanes need more care, drivers agree

Drivers have agreed they will take extra care through Monza's re-designed Prima Variante chicane for this weekend's Italian GP

The circuit's owners have improved safety by making the entry to the chicane much slower and tighter.

But that has only led to widespread driver fears there will be more collisions in the race or more crucially as all 22 cars try to funnel through just after the start.

After a driver's meeting on Friday at Monza David Coulthard said drivers had agreed a more cautious approach after a series of accidents at the first bend in recent races.

"We've all agreed to take more care," he said.

"As far as the 10 second penalty is concerned drivers, as I understand it, will not be penalised as long as no place or advantage is gained," the Scottish driver continued.

"That will be easy to check by looking at positions and lap times."

There had been concerns drivers would be automatically hit with a penalty if they overran the chicane even if they had not gained an advantage.
