Hockenheim storms set to continue

The Formula 3000 practice session has been heavily delayed because of this afternoon's deluge, and may not take place at all as the track crews continue to work to clear the waterlogged circuit.

The same weather is forecast for tomorrow, potentially causing chaos for the F1 session.

Earlier today, Grand Prix drivers and team bosses were among thousands trapped in the circuit for over an hour after the paddock exit tunnel became flooded. Fire engines had to be called to pump out the water and free the F1 community from the infield.

Inside the circuit teams were left battling rising water levels rather than each other as Hockenheim was hit by freak weather conditions that belonged more to Malaysia than Mannheim. Parts of the pit lane were submerged in six inches of water.

A duck took to the waterlogged track and as the torrential rain continued for over an hour it eventually had somewhere to paddle. In the garages mechanics had to scramble to move sensitive electronic equipment out of harm's way and caused short-circuiting in some garages.

Motorhomes were flooded and catering staff had to hurriedly erect waterproof curtains and sweep away the rising tide of water. The official Friday press conference was also cancelled because the deluge on the roof was so loud the speakers could not be heard by the 350-strong international press corps.
