Irvine plans German GP return
Eddie Irvine should return to Grand Prix racing at the next round of the world championship in Germany in two weeks time, according to his Jaguar team
But specialists in London have still not discovered the root of the stomach problems that prevented him from taking part in this weekend's Austrian Grand Prix. It was initially thought he was suffering appendicitis, but that has been ruled out now.
The Jaguar driver had extensive tests after flying back to London on Friday evening from Austria and the tests continued through Saturday.
Doctors said there is no immediate cause for concern and he would be released from the hospital before the end of Sunday. But he is to return next week for further tests.
"Obviously I am disappointed not to be taking part in Austria this weekend - especially since it is a race I won last year," said Irvine. "But I hope to be back for the German Grand Prix."
From his hospital bed, he praised 25-year-old Brazilian Luciano Burti, who deputises for him this weekend.
"Luciano has done a great job to get into the race considering the little time he had in practice before going into qualifying," added Irvine.
