Magny-Cours Test: Day 1
David Coulthard has backed up talk of keeping his championship challenge alive after topping the time sheets for McLaren-Mercedes on the first day of testing at Magny-Cours
The Scot put the disappointment of finishing just outside the points at the Canadian Grand Prix behind him to put in a time 0.2s faster than McLaren test driver Olivier Panis, who in turn was 0.3s quicker than Barrichello.
Michael Schumacher finished the day in fourth spot 0.7s adrift of Coulthard's fastest lap, after suffering problems with his Ferrari's telemetry.
Arrows driver Jos Verstappen was seventh quickest, with only Diniz, Frenzten and the top four above him. The Dutchman was evidently continuing his superb form from the Canadian Grand Prix, where he finished fifth.
This was the fourth major test of the season and as such 10 F1 teams were present, with only Minardi staying away. Testing continues tomorrow and finishes on Thursday.
