But the driver who finds the most time on these second runs is Hamilton, with a 1m18.140s he goes straight to the top of the leaderboard.
Another improvement from Bottas, who sets a 1m18.248s. That stretches his advantage over Verstappen, who had gotten down to a 1m18.422s.
Norris, Sainz and Latifi are the only drivers that have used the hard tyres so far, the latter having already pulled his Williams into the garage for a debrief. Tsunoda remains the only driver yet to venture out on track with repairs ongoing to the rookie's AlphaTauri.
Now Perez has shown his hand and takes fourth with a 1m18.971s, almost four tenths shy of his team-mate.
Gasly becomes the latest improver, popping up to fourth on a 1m19.250s, but not to be deterred Ocon snatches back the honour of fastest Frenchman and slots in ahead on a 1m19.232s.
We've had our first track limits deletion of the session. Congratulations to Mazepin, who takes home the prize for running wide at Turn 11.
Hamilton puts in his first lap on the mediums and goes second, three tenths adrift of Bottas with a 1m18.697s. But that is usurped by Verstappen, who slots in between the two Mercedes on a 1m18.581s.
From somewhere in the corner of my brain, the remark about Alonso and fuel has just conjured the memory that he took pole in Hungary back in 2009 with the very lightly-fuelled Renault R29. Is that one of the worst pole-sitting cars in F1 history? Answers on a postcard please.
Bottas now goes top for Mercedes on a 1m18.376s, becoming the first man to duck under the 1m19s bracket. He's over a full second quicker than Alonso in second, with Stroll now third for Aston Martin and Ocon fourth in the second Alpine.
Leclerc's grip on top spot is fleeting though, as Alonso - yes, that wily 40-year-old fox - snatches P1 with a 1m19.419s. Good effort that from the 2003 Hungary winner on mediums (although, of course, we don't know what fuel he's running).
The first timed lap is posted by Sainz, a 1m21.084s on the hard. But that is immediately beaten by Ferrari team-mate Leclerc on the mediums with a 1m19.654s.
Tsunoda, you may recall, was the driver responsible for bringing out the red flag with his spin at Turn 4 in FP1 earlier. Still, he ended the session P12.
Raikkonen and Sainz are the first two cars out on track, followed by Giovinazzi. Only the Red Bulls and Tsunoda are still in their garages for the time being.
The light at the pit exit turns green and we're underway, with a flurry of cars immediately heading out on track.
Just over a minute to go until the session gets underway. Are we seated comfortably?
Breaking news emerging this afternoon is that Red Bull Racing has parted ways with an employee after racist text messages recently emerged online. Here's the full story: https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/red-bull-parts-company-with-f1-employee-after-racist-messages-emerge/6639086/
Before action gets underway, what's your favourite Hungary moment? Hill's heroics in the Arrows have to be up there, so too Button's memorable breakthrough win in 2006 for Honda - with Pedro de la Rosa making his one and only podium appearance.

But for me, it has to be Thierry Boutsen's hare and tortoise win in 1990, a race he regaled to Autosport last year to mark the 30th anniversary: https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/how-hungarys-tortoise-and-hare-grand-prix-was-won-5114115/5114115/
For those of you out there who are weather fans, the air temp is a toasty 32.1 degrees C, with track temps in excess of 63. Yes, it's a scorcher.
We did just have to check that last fact about Verstappen not winning in Hungary - he did race at the track in his only season in car racing before F1 in the 2014 FIA European F3 championship, but his best result was only P4 as Alpine driver Esteban Ocon swept to two wins.
Verstappen has never won at the Hungaroring - and indeed, it's not been an especially happy hunting ground over the years for Red Bull. It hasn't taken the top spot in Budapest since Daniel Ricciardo's victory in 2014, with Mark Webber in 2010 it's only other victor.
Action gets underway in just over 10 minutes at 14:00 BST, with the pack trying to hunt down the FP1 pace-setter Max Verstappen.
Good afternoon and welcome back to our live blog as we build up to FP2 at the Hungaroring.
Ocon, Tsunoda, Vettel, Ricciardo, Russell, Latifi, Schumacher, Kubica, Mazepin and Giovinazzi complete the second half of the order.
It's Verstappen, Bottas, Hamilton, Sainz, Gasly, Alonso, Leclerc, Perez, Norris and Stroll who make up the top 10.
And there's the chequered flag, as FP1 now comes to an end.
Perez moves up to eighth on his first soft run, going about two tenths faster than Norris in ninth.
Hamilton couldn't quite decide whether to get a bit racey with Leclerc there, but eventually elected to hang back. Practicing for Sunday, perhaps.
Verstappen goes quickest with a 1m17.555s, pipping Bottas' best by less than a tenth.
Little bit close in the pitlane there between, well, you know who.
The majority are bolting on softs, although Bottas has elected to pop out on the hard compound having done his soft runs.
The rear of the car looked to repeat its Paul Ricard shimmy, so the gearbox might be at risk here.
Tsunoda hit the barrier at Turn 4, the car just got loose and he rear-ended the wall.
Ah, there's a red flag. Timing screen suggests Tsunoda may be the cause.
"Argh, I've got traffic every lap," complains Leclerc. He's currently in P6 at the moment.
20 minutes remain in this session - Bottas, Hamilton and Sainz make up the top three so far.
Big wiggle at the final turn for Norris, who just ran out of grip and had to stick on some opposite lock to correct it.
