F1 Hungarian GP Live Commentary and Updates – FP3 & Qualifying

Updates from the Saturday practice and qualifying sessions at the Hungaroring for the Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix

Rain falls outside of the Aston Martin pit ahead of FP3

Following Charles Leclerc’s crash while leading last weekend’s French GP, Max Verstappen picked up the win and extended his F1 world championship lead to 63 points over his Ferrari rival.

But the main talking point in the F1 paddock has been Sebastian Vettel’s announcement that he will retire from F1 at the end of 2022.

The Hungarian GP marks the final race before F1’s summer break.

We are starting to see some improvements, with Vettel going second and Magnussen fourth.
The rain does look like it has eased off again. So, expect it to get heavier in a few minutes - such is the typical weather at the Hungaroring.
Hamilton finally makes his way out on track with just over half an hour to go.
Schumacher reports "a lot of standings water" as he goes for a flying lap. Just the German, Haas team-mate Magnussen and Bottas on track presently.
Albon reports he's starting to get some aquaplaning into Turn 10 and on the main straight. He also made a mistake at Turn 4, as has Zhou. Conditions definitely tougher.
With 20 minutes of the session gone, Leclerc leads Sainz, Vettel, Stroll, Alonso, Ricciardo, Tsunoda, Norris, Albon and Zhou.
Hamilton has climbed out of his Mercedes as most have returned to their garages. Only Latifi, Bottas, Zhou, Albon and Tsunoda on track currently.
Gasly has made a mistake up at Turn 4 as he locked up and ran on.
According to Ferrari, this heavier rain is expected for the next 30 minutes.
The rain looks like it has returned with a vengeance, which I suspect will return everyone back to pitlane.
Still no times on the board yet for both Mercedes drivers and both Red Bulls.
Vettel is the latest driver to get the Turn 6 chicane wrong in these conditions as he runs through it.
Alonso is now up to third on his inters, 2.4s off the pace. So, inters are looking like they will be a good option soon - but maybe not just yet.
Hamilton is now getting into his car. According to Sky, his Mercedes was just undergoing routine checks, rather than there being any problems.
Sainz is being asked about inters but says he's "not sure if it's worth the risk".
Leclerc tells his team he thinks the inters "could be a good option" as there's not much aquaplaning.
We've got our first glimpse of Alonso and the Alpine drive is indeed out on inters.
Leclerc is now fastest with a 1m43.364s as the rain looks to have stopped.
At Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton appears to be having some sort of electrical issue as his car is cordoned off.
Fernando Alonso has apparently gone out on intermediate tyres, according to the TV graphics.
Sainz goes top with a 1m45.569s, which is well over 20s down on Friday's best dry times.
Leclerc has a big snap coming out of Turn 5 and that forced him to run wide at the chicane.
Sainz is told sector three will be the worst for standing water. Meanwhile, Leclerc further up the road is on a flying lap.
Pitlane has gone green for FP3 but nobody is heading out just yet.
In the earlier Formula 3 race - according to our F2/3 reported Megan White - the drivers noted the chicane at Turn 6 was quite tricky to navigate in damp conditions.
Whether we get any running or not in FP3, the grass lining the Hungaroring definitely needed some rain!
In a true sign of the conditions easing, our own F1 report Luke Smith has made it back to the media centre from his coffee run.
In other news, it's been a big day for F1 as it launched its 'Drive It Out' campaign to combat fan abuse both at the race track and online.

Provisionally, there's 10 minutes till FP3 gets underway. Whether we see any cars on track, that's another question.
Ferrari led the way on Friday and the Scuderia looks like the favourite for success come Sunday. The rain has eased, but there's more forecast for across the day at present.
The safety car has gone out on track to check conditions as the marshals are hard at work clearing some standing water.
