F1 Hungarian GP Live Commentary and Updates – FP3 & Qualifying

Updates from the Saturday practice and qualifying sessions at the Hungaroring for the Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix

Rain falls outside of the Aston Martin pit ahead of FP3

Following Charles Leclerc’s crash while leading last weekend’s French GP, Max Verstappen picked up the win and extended his F1 world championship lead to 63 points over his Ferrari rival.

But the main talking point in the F1 paddock has been Sebastian Vettel’s announcement that he will retire from F1 at the end of 2022.

The Hungarian GP marks the final race before F1’s summer break.

But alas as last year proved, nothing can be taken for granted in Hungary. Lewis Hamilton took pole, his eighth at the Hungaroring, but couldn't possibly have predicted the sequence of events that led to him taking the restart after a red flag solo on the grid, switching to slicks a lap later than the rest of the field and being frustrated for lap after lap by Fernando Alonso as the Alpine driver's team-mate Esteban Ocon took a shock win.
A look over Forix tells us that there hasn't been a Ferrari on pole here since 2017, when Sebastian Vettel did the honours. Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc topped yesterday's FP1 and FP2 sessions in dry conditions, so are hot favourites to end that barren run in Hungary. Should they do so, who knows - perhaps they could emulate Vettel in 2017 by converting it to victory...
We mentioned the W Series race a few minutes ago. If you fancy reading the report, as Powell ended champion Jamie Chadwick's run of wins, then look no further: https://www.autosport.com/w-series/news/w-series-hungary-powell-takes-victory-to-end-chadwicks-winning-streak/10345846/
We're reliably informed that it was the first time since FP3 at the 2017 Italian GP that a Williams topped an F1 session. All told, for somebody who started watching F1 when a Williams 1-3 was nothing to write home about in its BMW-powered phase, it was a welcome dose of nostalgia. But unfortunately it will mean little come qualifying.
The conditions are far removed from those seen in FP3, which began in soaking wet conditions before a few braved the switch to intermediates late on. That explains how Williams ended up first and third, with Nicholas Latifi stunning Charles Leclerc by taking the top spot, with Alex Albon third.
We've just had the W Series race, won by Alice Powell, which began behind the safety car and ended in pretty much full dry conditions. There are still a few menacing-looking clouds lurking around though.
Welcome back to Autosport's Live Coverage from Saturday's action at the Hungaroring, as we gear up for qualifying in a little over 20 minutes.
We're going to take a break for lunch and get ready for qualifying, which is coming up at 3pm BST.

Join us then.
Leclerc sounds baffled over the radio to his team when told about Latifi's time.
The rest of the order finished with Hamilton in 11th from Schumacher, Ocon, Ricciardo, Stroll, Zhou, Tsunoda, Bottas, Gasly, Perez.
So it's Latifi from Leclerc, Albon, Verstappen, Russell, Alonso, Sainz, Norris, Vettel and Magnussen.
But it is Latifi in the Williams who will end FP3 fastest of all with a 1m41.480s!
Verstappen goes top as the chequered flag comes out with a 1m43.205s.
Vettel is out of the car and takes a look at the rear where he hit the barrier. There doesn't appear to be a huge amount of damage.
The session has been stopped after Vettel crashed at Turn 10 and backed into the barriers.
The sun is breaking through now and the track is slowly clearing with just 10 minutes to go.
Alonso jumps up to second on inters and is just 0.206s outside of Leclerc's benchmark set on wets.
I hate to say it, but if qualifying is run in similar conditions I think we're in for a long afternoon.
Russell goes straight on at Turn 12 but just about keeps it out of the barrier. He's out on full wets.
Leclerc has a spin exiting Turn 3 as he pushes for his first time attack on inters. He keeps it out of the barriers.
Hamilton's engineers admits the car is struggling to generate tyre temperature, particularly at the rear.
Ricciardo now reports he's got "absolutely no grip at the moment".
Hamilton echoes team-mate Russell's comments by saying there's "no grip on this tyre", referring to the inters.
Alonso makes an amazing save out of Turn 3 as the rear broke away, with the experienced Spaniard quickly getting his Alpine pointing in the right direction.
Alonso has gone back out on inters, as have both Mercedes drivers.
With 20 minutes to go, Leclerc continues to lead the timesheets from Vettel, Sainz, Norris, Magnussen, Schumacher, Zhou, Stroll, Alonso, Ricciardo.
Russell has gone out and come straight back in on a set of inters complaining of no grip.
Meanwhile, Latifi has been told there is no more rain expected.
Magnussen adds his name to the list of drivers running through the Turn 6 chicane.
Hamilton's first lap puts him 17th. Still no times for the Red Bulls yet.
