Perez, now in seventh after overtaking Ricciardo, is pressuring Norris now who in turn is on the tail of Alonso.
While Verstappen leads, Red Bull team-mate Perez has work to do as he's stuck in seventh.
Nikita Mazepin from last remains last after spinning at Village on the opening lap.
Russell had contact with the Ferrari of Sainz at Brooklands also on that first lap.
Alonso, starting on those softs, has made a stunning start and is up to fifth place ahead of Norris. Can he keep those tyres alive for 17 laps?
The hero from Friday qualifying George Russell hasn't had the best of starts in the Williams. He's lost two spots down to 10th behind the Aston Martin of Vettel and McLaren's Ricciardo.
Hamilton looks to fight back against Verstappen at Copse on the first lap but thinks better of it. As you were at the front.
Verstappen gets a super start and leads Hamilton! Bottas stays third after drawing alongside his team-mate into the first corner.
The formation lap for the F1 sprint at Silverstone is underway.
So those are your four drivers to keep an eye out for both at the start and at the end of this sprint as their tyre performance could prove pivotal.
Tyres alert! Bottas, Alonso, Ocon and Raikkonen on the softs. Everyone else is on the mediums.
Here we go then - this is your five-minute warning for the start of the first F1 sprint. Blink and you'll miss it - sort of.
The track temperature is still creeping up, it is almost at 50oC now, which could sway some drivers towards the medium compounds. It is roasting.
Both F1 big bosses Stefano Domenicali and Ross Brawn have been speaking pre-race and reiterated this sprint format is a test to see if it is what the fans want and engage with. So let us know your thoughts!

All F1 drivers have a free choice of tyre for the sprint  - Pirelli expect most to opt for the medium tyres but have a suspicion some might go bold with the softs - while there is no mandatory pitstops.

So where you finish the sprint is where you start the full grand prix, with the added bonus points for the top three (1st = 3, 2nd = 2 and 3rd = 1), alongside a small slice of F1 history for the winner.
Just in case you need bringing up to speed, here's what is coming up. A 17-lap event with the results deciding the final grid for Sunday's British GP. The winner will bag themselves pole position and three world championship points. Lovely.
Good afternoon! Who is ready to experience some proper F1 history? The build-up to the very first sprint qualifying race is well underway with the cars heading to the grid.
That's all for now, but do join us again this afternoon for the very first sprint qualifying race at 4:30pm local time.
Bit of drama at the end of the session. Bottas had a spin at Village after the chequered flag.
11th-20th:
Russell
Giovinazzi
Alonso
Raikkonen
Latifi
Tsunoda
Vettel
Stroll
Mazepin
Schumacher
Top 10 in FP2:
Verstappen
Leclerc
Sainz
Ocon
Perez
Norris
Ricciardo
Hamilton
Bottas
Gasly
The chequered flag has brought FP2 to an end. Verstappen fastest with a 1m29.902s.
Just five minutes to go. As expected, no one is really doing any proper time attacks.
Verstappen has been told the plan is to do six timed laps, maybe seven on the hard tyre.
Verstappen has completed 17 laps in this session. Leclerc in second has done the most with 27.
Fifteen minutes to go in FP2 and Verstappen still heads the timesheets from Leclerc and Sainz, with Ocon and Perez rounding out the top five.
Hamilton has just questioned if Mercedes is right to be running the engine as hard as it is right now, but the team responds it's happy with the current power mode.
Sainz did that lap on the soft tyre. Team-mate Leclerc is going quick too on the mediums.
Sainz guides his Ferrari to second, 0.605s off Verstappen's time.
Verstappen has upped his pace a bit and improves to a 1m29.902s.
Both McLarens have jumped up the order, Norris in third ahead of Ricciardo.
Verstappen continues to top the timesheets from Perez, with Hamilton third ahead of Gasly, Tsunoda, Russell, Latifi, Ocon, Bottas and Mazepin.
Still half an hour of this session to go and I'm beginning to understand Verstappen's point of view about this particular FP2.
Conditions are pretty punishing on the tyres. Track temperature is currently 43.7 degrees Celsius.
