Mercedes confirm Hakkinen for '07

Mercedes have announced that Mika Hakkinen will return for a third season in the DTM this year

The Finn's future in the series had been in some doubt after his disappointing 2006 season, although he was expected to be retained in the top HWA team's line-up.

"It's nice to continue being part of the Mercedes-Benz motorsport family," Hakkinen said. "It is important to continue my long-standing, successful partnership with them.

"My results in 2006 don't reflect our true potential and my target is to rectify that. I want to show what I am capable of in the DTM."

While the double Formula One world champion failed to add to his victory tally in 2006, he believes that he proved his speed when everything was right with the car.

"My three podium finishes and two fastest race laps indicate that the speed is there," he said. "I can fight for victories if everything runs without problems."

Norbert Haug, vice president of Mercedes-Benz motorsport, added that Hakkinen's involvement was important to the series as well as the team.

"It's good news that Mika will continue in the DTM," he said. "He will strengthen our team, and his continued involvement will boost the entire series.

"Mika has been in the spotlight of all media and spectators interest since his first lap in the DTM. I am convinced that in 2007 his fans will see the best of him."
