DTM Brands Hatch: Rast takes race two pole as Audis fill top eight

Rast led the times after the first runs by setting a lap in 1m15.696s and returned to the track inside the final five minutes to improve his time by over half a second.

That meant the Audi driver's 1m15.134s lap remained the benchmark as the manufacturer filled out the top eight positions.

Loic Duval improved late on to displace Robin Frijns, who suffered a dramatic exhaust manifold problem in yesterday's race, with Frijns setting two consecutive improvements for third.

Jamie Green ended the session in fourth ahead of Assen race winner Mike Rockenfeller.

Nico Muller stressed the need to improve his qualifying performances following Saturday's race, and the title contender placed his Audi sixth on the grid.

Pietro Fittipaldi recovered from a sizeable crash in Saturday's qualifying to seal seventh after his WRT Audi team rebuilt his RS5 DTM overnight.

Fittipaldi placed ahead of team-mate Jonathan Aberdein while Philipp Eng was the leading BMW driver in ninth.

Daniel Juncadella told Autosport on Saturday that his R-Motorsport Aston Martin squad had made a step forward with its underpowered engine and he took his Vantage to 10th on the grid.

Timo Glock was 11th ahead of title contender Marco Wittmann, who had led the session after the first flying laps before tumbling down the order.

Sheldon van der Linde and Joel Eriksson - driving again after a qualifying gearbox problem ruled him out of the race - placed their BMWs in 13th and 14th.

Paul Di Resta was unable to replicate his Saturday qualifying performance that played a part in his surprise opening race lead and ended up 15th.

Bruno Spengler was the final BMW in 16th, ahead of R-Motorsport's Jake Dennis and Ferdinand Habsburg.
