Turner wins Knockhill race 1

Darren Turner has taken victory from pole position in the first of today's three British Touring Car Championship races at Knockhill

The SEAT Sport UK man claimed the win in his Leon despite contact at the hairpin with Gordon Shedden, who was running second. Shedden had put his Honda Civic down the inside - the two cars touching - and looked set to take the lead, but suffered a puncture and suspension damage.

"It was exciting," said Turner. "I got a good start for once and pulled out a lead. Gordon took a bit of a lunge into the hairpin and there was contact. If his car had survived the impact he would've been walking away with it."

Colin Turkington brought his BMW 320si home second, ahead of Jason Plato, who had spent most of the race in sixth. Fabrizio Giovanardi, his title rival, had looked certain to claim the final podium slot in his Vectra, but was hit by Tom Onslow-Cole.

Onslow-Cole claimed his BMW's clutch had gone and he could not avoid making contact, finishing fourth, while Giovanardi recovered to cross the line in seventh.

In a repeat of their coming together at Brands Hatch a fortnight ago, Matt Neal and Mat Jackson made contact on the opening lap, putting both drivers out of the race. Tom Chilton also retired after heavily damaging his car when he hit a tyre barrier.
