Grapevine: BTCC to pay tribute to Leslie, Lloyd

The British Touring Car Championship will pay special tribute to former competitors David Leslie and Richard Lloyd, who perished in a plane crash in Kent last Sunday, when the series reconvenes at Rockingham next weekend

Series organisers have invited all current BTCC drivers to stand next to their cars on the grid ahead of race one, and applaud the lives of Leslie and Lloyd along with team members, officials, media and the race day crowd,.

BTCC series director Alan Gow commented: "It is wholly appropriate that we remember David and Richard in this way - their lives, achievements and what they gave to the BTCC (and motor sport in general) should be honoured and celebrated.

"We ask everyone at Rockingham to join us in whole-heartedly honouring these two really special individuals."

Leslie, who was 54 when he died, was one of the BTCC's star drivers during the 1990s, considered by many to be its halcyon years, winning nine and finishing runner-up to Nissan teammate Laurent Aiello in 1999.

Lloyd enjoyed success in the BTCC both as a driver and team owner.

He won 12 races in Chevrolet Camaros in the 1970s, plus three class titles with his famous Golf GTis. In 1996, he tasted success of a different kind when his Audi Sport UK team guided Frank Biela to the BTCC title with the A4 Quattro.
