Giovanardi wins chaotic race 1

Fabrizio Giovanardi has taken victory in an incident-packed first British Touring Car Championship race at Brands Hatch

The VX Racing star came home ahead of title rival Jason Plato in the wet race, which had been red-flagged after a first lap incident.

Mat Jackson spun his BMW 320si coming down Paddock Hill Bend, triggering an 11-car pile-up. The accident left reigning champion Matt Neal's car destroyed, with Neal taken to the medical centre with suspected whiplash.

Pole-sitter Colin Turkington led from the restart, but later spun at Paddock Hill Bend, allowing Giovanardi to take the lead and the chequered flag. He has now cut Plato's championship lead down to 10 points.

Plato, with maximum ballast, had lined up an impressive third on the grid but had a slow getaway at the restart. He was followed home in third by teammate Darren Turner, while Turkington finished in fourth place.
