Giovanardi clinches second BTCC title

Fabrizio Giovanardi clinched the British Touring Car title despite only finishing 14th in the first race of the day at Brands Hatch

Mat Jackson won the race up front, while Giovanardi secured his second consecutive championship with his main rival Jason Plato only managing fifth place.

Giovanardi went off at Paddock Hill Bend on lap two, as did Adam Jones, and the pair triggered another accident that eliminated Jason Hughes and John George as they rejoined the track.

Jackson sprinted into the lead at the first corner, ahead of polesitter Stephen Jelley, and never looked back.

It was Jackson's fourth win of the year and moved him into third place in the championship, as well as closing the gap to Colin Turkington in the Independents' chase from 22 to 15 points.

Turkington finished fourth, having benefitted from a gearbox problem that eliminated Team RAC teammate Jelley early on and a momentary lack of pace from SEAT's Darren Turner, who dropped from third to sixth on lap 17 between Paddock and Druids.

The stars of the race, though, were the Motorbase BMWs of Rob Collard and Steven Kane. Both carved through the field to third and fourth on lap 16 before Kane reversed the positions with a demon move on the brakes at Paddock.

Kane then put an equally brave move on Turner at Druids before the SEAT's brief slow moment elevated Collard, putting two Motorbase cars on a BTCC podium for the first time.

Behind the BMW 1-2-3-4, Plato held off Matt Neal's Vauxhall, Turner, Tom Chilton, Tom Onslow-Cole, and Andrew Jordan, who completed the top ten in his Honda.
