Fords fly in Brands Hatch practice

Tom Chilton led an Arena Ford one-two in practice for the third round of the British Touring Car Championship at Brands Hatch

Chilton's pace-setting 1m32.361s lap came in the morning session, and was seven hundredths of a second up on his team-mate Tom Onslow-Cole.

Onslow-Cole was only ninth quickest in the morning, but leapt to the top of the afternoon timesheets with a minute to go, preventing a clean sweep for Chilton.

Matt Neal and Gordon Shedden were third and fifth quickest for Honda, the pair sandwiching James Nash's Triple 8 Vauxhall.

Andrew Jordan survived a trip through the gravel at Clearways during the afternoon to set the sixth quickest time in his Eurotech Vauxhall, while Paul O'Neill was next up for Tech-Speed Honda.

Alex MacDowall (Chevrolet), Rob Collard (WSR BMW) and David Pinkney (Pinkney Vauxhall) completed the top 10, although the latter twice went off at Graham Hill bend in the afternoon before pulling off altogether at Surtees with a few minutes left.

It was a bad morning for championship leader Jason Plato. He managed only four flying laps before falling oil pressure forced him to spend the rest of the session in the pits.

Once the problem was fixed, he pulled himself up from 15th to 12th in the afternoon, but was still over a second behind Chilton's pace-setting time.

Motorbase BMW also suffered problems, Steven Kane's power steering failing in the morning and Mat Jackson pulling off the track at Westfield midway through the later session. They were 14th and 13th quickest.

The afternoon session also featured a brief stoppage after Andy Neate beached his WSR BMW in the gravel at Clearways after 12 minutes.
