Thompson unsure about title chances

James Thompson is not expecting to fight for the World Touring Car Championship despite his dominant performance at Valencia last weekend

The British driver moved into sixth place in the standings with his double victory on Sunday, but he is not anticipating that he will be as dominant for the rest of the season.

Thompson had not scored a point in his Alfa Romeo in the first two races of the season, but his results in Spain left him just 11 points adrift of the championship leaders.

"The championship has just started for me," he said. "The car is progressing leaps and bounds now, and you can't ask for better than a pole and two wins.

"For the rest of the year, I think we can have a strong season. Maybe not contest for the championship just yet though because we are still developing the car."

Thompson praised his team for the way that they have improved the car during the early stages of the year.

"At this level it was my best-ever performance, but if you have the best car then you can make it look easy," he said.

"The team have made such an effort to help me with the car and I'm really pleased to reward them with two victories.

"I have a lot of confidence in the Alfa, but it's been a bit of an unknown because we've not done much testing."
