SEAT boss wants rule change

SEAT Sport boss Jaime Puig has suggested that the team could pull out of the World Touring Car Championship unless something is done to level up the field, this week's Autosport magazine reports

The Spanish cars were unable to compete with the BMWs in the opening round of the season at Curitiba, as the German manufacturer took a clean sweep of both podiums in Brazil.

The rear-wheel drive BMWs were consistently around half a second a lap faster than the SEATs, and Puig wants to see a weight break given to SEAT to enable them to compete.

"We have the heaviest car and the worst aerodynamics," said Puig. "That's proved by the FIA. We expected some change before the season.

"We have a year-by-year commitment to the WTCC," he added. "If it's good for us, we continue. If it's not, we don't. Now it's not good for us."

The Curitiba race could be the most extreme case of the season though, as the cars were running without success ballast.

BMW received a 15kg weight break for agreeing to rolling starts for the opening race of each weekend for this season, which negates their rear-wheel drive advantage at starts.

Their cars also get a 30kg weight break for running a manual five-speed gearbox, rather than a six-speed sequential setup.
