Race 2: Priaulx dominates

BMW's Andy Priaulx put the Alfa Romeo's back in the shade again after taking a decisive victory in race two of the ETCC at Donington Park on Sunday. The Briton had a fantastic opening lap to take the lead from third on the grid while his rivals hit trouble

With the top eight positions reversed for the second race, it was BMW's Kurt Mollekens at the front of the grid alongside SEAT's Jordi Gene. The Spaniard though was out at the first corner while further back Alfa's Fabrizio Giovanardi had smoke pouring out of his tyre and was forced to retire.

Reigning champion Jorg Muller was also forced out after a coming together with the troubled Giovanardi. Unbelievably, it is Muller's first race accident in three years but the German is not happy and wants an inquiry to deal with what he called the aggressive driving of Giovanardi.

Meanwhile, back with the action and it wasn't long before Priaulx took the lead ahead of the two Alfas of Augusto Farfus and Gabriele Tarquini with race one winner James Thompson battling it out for fourth with Mollekens.

It was only when Tarquni passed Farfus that Priaulx looked to be threatened as the Italian closed in on the Brit so that just 1 second separated the two. With confidence oozing from his victory in race one, Thompson jumped up to third spot from fifth with Germany's Dirk Muller in fourth ahead of Antonio Garcia and Mollekens. Farfus dropped out of the running after experiencing technical problems.

Priaulx remained in control of the action though and was unfazed by Tarquini's aggressive challenge. The Briton took the win ahead of the Italian with Thompson hanging onto third ahead of Muller, Garcia and Mollekens.

"I'm ecstatic," said Priaulx. "Yesterday I had such a bad time in qualifying, we turned around the car and didn't know what to do. The ballast on board was driving me crazy. Then I managed to calm down and reflect. I knew this was going to be my turning point for the championship; I have to carry on with the 40-kg in the car, but getting this extra weight out of my head. In the first race I focused on finishing in the points, and gain a good starting position for the second race. It paid off."

Priaulx's win moves him to the top of the championship standings on 82 points, four clear of Dirk Muller with Jorg Muller a further three points adrift.
