World series confirmed

The sport's governing body, the FIA, has given the green light to a World Touring Car Championship in 2005, and as many as six manufacturers are expected to take part

The news, announced following Wednesday's FIA World Motorsport Council meeting, means a 10-round calendar, featuring races in Europe, South America and Asia. The series will begin and end with long-haul trips for the European-based teams, with Buenos Aires in Argentina and Macau in China to bookend the season.

It will visit the new F1-standard circuit at Istanbul in Turkey, as well as feature a round at Britain's Donington Park.

Manufacturers expected to contest the series are Alfa Romeo, BMW, SEAT, Ford and, possibly, Peugeot. A sixth marque has been in contact with series organisers KSO, which has run the European Touring Car Championship as part of the SuperRacing Weekend package in recent years.
