Farfus beats Menu to Brands pole

Augusto Farfus pipped Alain Menu to pole position for tomorrow's World Touring Car Championship round at Brands Hatch

Menu had been the quicker in practice earlier in the day, but Farfus unleashed a stunning 1:32.794 lap, quarter of a second quicker than the circuit record for Super 2000 cars.

Menu too, set an incredible pace joining Farfus on the front row with just two thousandths of a second separating them.

Rob Huff led an all-British second row, alongside reigning champion Andy Priaulx. Jorg Muller was fifth fastest, with Yvan Muller the top SEAT in sixth and the only works Leon in the top ten.

Chevrolet's Nicola Larini and BMW's Alex Zanardi filled the fourth row, with Tom Coronel's SUNRED SEAT ninth and Roberth Dahlgren completing the top ten for Volvo.

Briton James Thompson slipped from fifth in the day's earlier practice session to 13th on the grid for his home race.

Gabriele Tarquini, who leads the championship by a single point from Yvan Muller, qualified down in 18th place after running off the road on what would have been his best lap.

Sergio Hernandez will line up first of the Independent runners in 12th place overall, four places clear of his nearest rival Pierre-Yves Corthals.

Felix Porteiro had the only major accident of the session, crashing his BMW in the barrier at Paddock Hill Bend on his final flying lap. He previous best effort put him 15th.
