SS1, Mendenitsa 1: Burns by a tenth

Richard Burns edged Subaru team mate Petter Solberg buy just 0.1s after 26.92 gruelling kilometres of the Parnassos test, stage one of the Acropolis Rally

The Englishman came to Greece on a mission to blast back into World Rally Championship contention on an event that suits the Impreza, but with Marcus Gronholm's Peugeot just one tenth further back from Solberg, the Japanese marque may not have it all its own way.

Colin McRae, who is looking for a third win on the trot, was fourth for Ford, ahead of team mate Carlos Sainz and the Mitsubishi of WRC points-leader Tommi Makinen.

Japanese driver Toshio Arai confirmed the form of Subaru - and himself - by setting seventh best time, just a fortnight after a career best-equalling fourth on the Cyprus Rally.

Citroen is giving its Xsara its WRC gravel debut and Swede Thomas Radstrom got off to a promising start with the eighth fastest time, ahead of Mitsubishi's Freddy Loix and Armin Schwarz's Skoda.
