McRae: Fitness could scupper my title bid
Colin McRae has admitted that the slow pace of recovery from his Tour of Corsica accident injuries could be the Achilles' heel that ruins his world title bid
The Scot, five points adrift of world championship leader Marcus Gronholm, has not been allowed to train between last month's Sanremo Rally and this weekend's Rally Australia because of the risk of aggravating his fractured cheekbone.
"I'm not completely unfit," said McRae at the pre-event press conference in Australia. "If this rally gets hot and dusty it'll be harder for me. I just tend to feel tired and when that happens, concentration starts to go a little. And three days of competition magnify that problem, of course.
"Fitness could be the Achilles' heel, but we won't know for sure until we start this event," added the Ford ace. "A lot will depend on the weather and how hot it gets."
Weather forecasts for the Perth region won't fill McRae with confidence: Friday and Saturday at least are expected to be swathed in sunshine.
Rally Australia starts on Thursday. Follow all the action with Autosport.com's live stage timing, starting at approx 10:45 GMT.
