Martin crashes out

Ford's Markko Martin is out of the Acropolis Rally after skidding off the track on the first day on Friday denting Ford's hopes of a fifth consecutive victory in Greece. The Estonian will be allowed to continue the rally under the new SupeRally system, on trial this weekend

Martin, winner of the event last year, slid off the course 22kms into the third 32.5km stage while lying in eighth place. "The car skidded wide on a third gear turn and into a ditch where we were unable to recover it," said spokesman Mark Wilford.

The Estonian will be allowed back into the rally on Saturday under a trial of the controversial new SupeRally system set to be introduced in 2005, he will not be able to score any points or be included in the final classification though.

Under the previous format, any drivers retiring from a stage were not allowed to continue the rally.

Peugeot's Marcus Gronholm leads after the first three stages followed closely by team-mate Harri Rovanpera. Reigning world champion Petter Solberg lies in third for Subaru.
