FIA responds to Peugeot

Motorsport's governing body, the FIA, has hit back at Peugeot Sport director Corrado Provera's comments from a press conference on Thursday, when he slammed the governing body's decision to exclude Marcus Gronholm from the Cyprus Rally

The statement read: "It would be unfair to the other competitors if decisive action was not taken in response to the use of a clearly illegal component. Rather than making unfounded and inflammatory comments regarding the consequences of using an illegal component, Mr Provera should address the management failings which allowed such a component to be used in the first instance.

"Perhaps he should also explain why a non-homologated component was fitted if it gave no competitive advantage."

Gronholm was excluded when the water pump of his Peugeot 307 WRC was judged to feature a plastic impeller. Provera disputed this part was illegal, although admitted that he could not prove it.

"We were missing something which could have proved [our innocence]," said Provera yesterday. "Some cars were fitted [with a plastic impeller] but we could not prove it. Even though we are quite a complicated company, we are not accustomed to lie."
