Loeb: Japan victory is essential
Sebastien Loeb believes that he has no option but to win in Japan if he wants to keep his title hopes alive
The reigning world champion has closed the gap to Marcus Gronholm from 10 points to four in the last two events, but he is expecting a tougher time in Rally Japan, despite the fact that he won the event last year.
"Given the number of events to come after Japan and also given the current gap in the championship, we don't really have any alternative but to target another win," said Loeb.
"Before Spain, I needed to win the five remaining rallies. After Corsica, I still need to win three. We're getting there, but the challenge is as tough as ever."
Loeb added that he is expecting a stronger challenge from Gronholm than he has in the previous two events, which were both on asphalt. However, he admitted that he cannot afford to settle for second.
"We need to try to finish ahead of Marcus," he said. "If we succeed, and even if he finishes second, we will still be in with a chance for the title.
"It won't be easy because he is quick in Japan, but we will try to put pressure on him. Neither of us can afford to make the slightest mistake."
