Gronholm expects decider in Wales
Marcus Gronholm is preparing for his World Rally Championship title battle with Sebastien Loeb to go down to the wire this season
The Finn is four points ahead of the reigning world champion with three rounds to go, but Loeb has slashed his lead from 10 points to four in the last two events.
After two consecutive asphalt events where Loeb has taken victory, Gronholm will be expected to bounce back on the gravel in Japan, but the Finn believes that even if he does extend his lead next weekend, it probably won't be enough to beat Loeb to the title before Rally GB.
"It is too close to call," said Gronholm. "A win in Japan would obviously help but I think this could go all the way down to the final round in Wales.
"The drivers' championship is at an exciting point. There are just four points between us and that is not a comfortable margin."
Gronholm will take comfort from heading to Japan though, as the stages are similar to those on other events where he has been successful in the past.
"The roads are very narrow in places, but quite quick," he added. "They remind me of the stages in Great Britain, and even Finland in places. They require great care because there are deep ditches by the side of the road."
