Pirro: lap times worthless tonight

Emanuele Pirro has given up hope of setting a meaningful qualifying time for the Le Mans 24 Hours tonight after wet weather hit the circuit

Poor weather meant that lap times in the maiden qualifying session this evening were 45 seconds off the best dry times set in official free practice last week.

The Italian is now just aiming to use the remaining session to gather wet weather set-up information in the Audi diesel-powered R10 TDI.

"With the conditions being rainy, I don't see today as qualifying," Pirro told autosport.com. "We'll do some laps to check that the car is well balanced in the wet and then we'll wait for tomorrow.

"Here qualifying is not real qualifying: it's more like free practice counting towards the starting grid which in the end it doesn't count for much."

Pirro added that he believes rivals Pescarolo will be a real threat for outright victory this weekend.

"When you're driving an Audi you can only expect to win," he said. "But the Pescarolos are not just a little bit fast - they are very fast.

"Here, in the end, everyone does what he can by going as fast as possible and let's hope the Pescarolos stay behind.

"In my opinion we are well prepared. We've done a lot of testing. I think we should be ok."
