New LMP1 rules package 'close', according to WEC organisers

Organisers of the World Endurance Championship say they are close to finalising the 2014 LMP1 regulations after a meeting of the FIA Endurance Commission in Paris last week

The meeting, which was attended by several major figures from the championship and its organisers (the FIA and ACO), covered several topics surrounding sportscar racing.

Speaking about the meeting, president of the FIA Endurance Commission Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones said that progress was made on the 2014 regulations, which he said "will put endurance racing at the forefront of development of new technologies that manufacturers will use to build road cars of the future".

He added that a priority was to create an environment in sportscar racing which would offer manufacturers far more freedom than in any other motorsport arena.

"After this meeting we are close to finalising the regulations so the teams and manufacturers can get on with the job of designing and building the cars," he said.

"The new regulations will enable manufacturers to develop and test these new technologies in endurance race conditions that are very hard to replicate elsewhere.

"Is it why we are working hard to make sure the 2014 regulations are rigorous enough but are also flexible to allow manufacturers to come up with new solutions that will ultimately benefit every road user around the world."

ACO president Pierre Fillon, who also attended the meeting, added that the focus was on "several key areas that will have a direct impact on the future growth of endurance racing".

He also confirmed that the 2013 WEC calendar will be announced by the end of September, and "will include some exciting new venues."
