Classic 24-hour race attracts huge entry
The organisers of the Le Mans 24 Hours sportscar classic have received a huge 96 entries for this year's event, a 20 percent rise on last year's figure
The Automobile Club de L'Ouest face the unenviable task of having to select just half of the requested entries to produce the final 48 cars which can compete in the race on June 15/16.
As in the past two years, the ACO Selection Committee will chose which cars are invited to compete before the official test day on May 5, therefore avoiding potentially dangerous fast laps to ensure an entry on speed. There will be six reserve entries which are also required to attend the test day.
With the 96 entries, the ACO have revealed that 44 of them are prototypes (LMP 900 and LMP 675 classes), with the rest being tin-top GT cars.
Only eight cars are assured an entry for Le Mans through victories in three specially allotted events last years: Le Mans itself, Petit Le Mans and the Estoril European Le Mans Series event.
