Winterbottom takes Bahrain pole
Ford Performance Racing's Mark Winterbottom has taken another pole position with the fastest time in qualifying for the Desert 400 in Bahrain
Winterbottom was fastest in qualifying for the fourth consecutive round, and made up for the disappointment of losing his Surfers pole by taking pole in Bahrain by over a quarter of a second.
Next on the grid were a pair of Fords, Jim Beam's Steven Johnson and Caltex Racing's Russell Ingall, both recording their best efforts for 2007. Just behind them were Toll HSV's Garth Tander and Ingall's teammate James Courtney.
After his car was damaged on the way to the track earlier in the week, and was not fast in Thursday's practice, Mark Skaife performed a remarkable turn-around to set the sixth fastest time in his Holden Racing Team Commodore, just edging out Toll HSV's Rick Kelly.
Completing the top ten were Paul Morris, Greg Murphy and Lee Holdsworth. Just outside the ten were the two Team Vodafone Falcons of Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup in 11th and 14th, a surprise after being in the top five in opening practice.
A driver who must have been disappointed with his qualifying position was Steven Richards, third fastest in practice, his teammate on pole, as Richards could only manage 19th position for the start of race one.
