Tander wins race one

Toll HSV Dealer Team's Garth Tander followed on from his shootout form to take victory in race one of the Bigpond 400 at Queensland Raceway

Tander took the win despite a stall in his pit stop which cost him the lead to Jason Bright. Tander closed in on Bright and retook the lead on lap 21.

Meanwhile Bright struggled with his brakes in the closing laps but held on to second ahead of James Courtney despite a late-race safety car period.

After starting twelfth, a good start and good strategy moved Craig Lowndes up to fourth place. Completing the top five was Russell Ingall

While it was a good day for Stone Brothers Racing, with Courtney's first podium finish and Ingall's fifth place, it was not good for their Holden rivals Holden Racing Team.

Driving a brand new car, Todd Kelly's gearbox woes continued, as this time the gear lever snapped with the gearbox in neutral and will start last in tomorrow's reverse grid race.

His teammate fared little better. Mark Skaife got a good start and showed great early speed, and on lap eleven, James Courtney passed Rick Kelly heading into turn three.

Skaife appeared to follow but Rick Kelly turned in, having let Courtney through. Skaife hit Kelly behind his rear wheel, both cars spinning. Kelly dropping a couple of places, while Skaife dropped to 24th.

More bad news was to come for Skaife however, receiving a drive-through penalty for the incident, eventually finishing in 21st place.
